BioAgora and the Transformative Pathways project are pleased to invite researchers to the first session of the new Nature & Economy Dialogues Series: Getting to the Roots with (or without) Nature Credits
When: 3 March 2026; 13:00-15:00 CET
Where: Online – https://events.pensoft.net/
This new dialogue series connects researchers across disciplines to rethink the political and economic structures shaping biodiversity loss and recovery. The focus is on identifying and enabling the transformative changes needed to address the root causes of the biodiversity crisis. In this inaugural session, we will zoom in on nature credits. What are they? How do they work? What are their potentials and limitations? And crucially – do they address the structural drivers of biodiversity loss, or mainly treat its symptoms?
We will hear from three experts:
- Francisco Alpizar, an applied behavioural economist working in the interface between environmental and development issues. He is the Chair and Professor of the Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Group in Wageningen University and Research. He will set the scence with a definition and typology of nature credits and their successful operating space.
- Alexandra Köves, an ecological economist, associate professor at the Corvinus University of Budapest, head of the Ecological Economics Research Centre at the Corvinus Institute of Advanced Studies. She is president of the European Society for Ecological Economics. She hosts the podcast series Economics for Rebels. She will give an insights in the different views and moral reflections within the ecological economics society on nature credits.
- Jeanne Nel, inter- and transdisciplinary researcher working on embedding theoretical and technical research into processes that stimulate learning and collective actions towards just and sustainable futures. She heads the Biodiverse Environment Programme at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands, and holds a Research Associate position in South Africa at the Nelson Mandela University. She will bridge theintroduced
perspectives of the other two speakers and introduce the topic of transformative change.
The presentations will be followed by an interactive discussion, searching for diverging opinions and common ground on the question if nature credits can help overcome or rather reinforce the root causes of biodiversity loss.
