BioMonWeek2026

The first edition of BioMonWeek2026 kicked off this week in Montpellier, France, marking an important milestone for biodiversity monitoring in Europe. As the organisers noted during the opening, BioMonWeek signals a new era of cooperation and a shared commitment to building a stronger, more coordinated vision for biodiversity monitoring across the continent.

Many Alternet friends have contributed to the organisation of the event and are actively participating in the discussions. Among them, Gilles Doignon from DG Research & Innovation at the European Commission recalled on stage a powerful reflection that emerged during last year’s Alternet Conference on Transformative Change: “We do not know what we need.”

He linked this thought to the role of DG Research & Innovation, and to events such as BioMonWeek – to help identify what is truly needed by bringing people together, listening across communities, and ensuring that many voices are included in the conversation. Here’s to a productive and innovative BioMonWeek 2026!
